Does not support playback of Blu-ray without purchase of a plug in. I believe the last rev of version 8 would play blu-ray movies with Nero Showtime.

This opinion relates to multiple versions [9.0.9.4 and 9.2.6.0] of Nero 9 trailware directly from nero's website.

I do not believe the trialware is different than the full paid version so here goes...

1) It takes literally forever to install. Maybe related but the install process will create multiple restore points for each of its applications. Why? Isn't one restore point sufficient?

2) Once installed 9.0.9.4 had screwed the registry so bad that when any CD or DVD disk was inserted the context menu had a new listing... ERROR: UNKNOWN RESOURCE ID. Installation of 9.2.6.0 only made things worse as Nero 9 would no longer run on my system. I tries to re-install 9.0.9.4 but it too would no longer run.

Note: It is absolutely amazing how many registry entries were added. I would strongly recommend you backup your registry before attempting a Nero 9 install - you've been warned.

I emailed tech support and they just told me to ensure a clean install with the clean tool.

3) So, using the Nero General Clean Tool to clean up garbage their uninstaller was unable to clean, resulted in Visual C++ runtime errors. Odd, none of my other apps that use Visual C++ have runtime errors.

Do your own research and see that this software is horrible. For those that do get it to work most likely did the standard install and not custom install.

I don't normally read, let alone write, reviews before the product is actually used ("box hard to open, delivery was late," that kind of thing), but this is special. I installed this beast last night, by which I don't mean for 20 minutes last night, but pretty much all night. It took hours. Finally it finished, then offered to look for updates on the website and install them. Logical enough idea, but not the way they run it. Somehow it installed the WHOLE THING again, never mind the few components that might have actually changed. And we could have danced all night, since I never got a "components have been updated" message.

Ah, those components! Someone went nuts dividing this program--each function is now its own module, with a snazzy name and a brief description that seems like two or three of the other modules, inasmuch as one can translate it from marketing whizbang-ese into functional English. The best part is that this obviously complicated, powerful program has not a scrap of documentation--the CD hunkers alone in that great big pretty box. But never fear, there's a PDF to look at--ALL the documentation is in computer files, on the CD. Always a nice touch, and especially convenient on a disk-burning program, since by its nature it can't be interrupted mid-burn to summon up instructions. I expect to add to my coaster collection.

But wait, there's more! So much more. Remember those modules? Well, there isn't just one user's manual on disk. There's NINETEEN SEPARATE ones, one for each module! Oooh, I just can't wait to start with this one. I promise followups as I use this program. I mean, programs. Sure wish I'd read the reviews here before buying it.

Nero 9 - a disaster December 30, 2008

I had waited to upgrade from Nero 6 for quite a while since it had all I needed. In November, I got an email with a discounted offer. I bought it online without looking at the reviews or looking at the Nero user forum. That was a big mistake. The install took an exceedingly long time. After the install, when I inserted a DVD, the autoplay dialog box would have "ERROR: UNKNOWN RESOURCE ID" for several of the options, which should have been Nero Showtime or Nero Burning ROM, etc. After finding the Nero user forum, I found that this was a common occurrence. Also, the various components were very slow to load. Showtime took about a minute.

I tried several times to uninstall, reload, defrag, optimize the registry in order to fix the problems, but without success. You cannot properly uninstall from using the "Add or Remove Programs" in the Control Panel. If you do uninstall from the Control Panel and then reinstall, you will get a message that you need to use the "Clean Tool" program. This really means that the uninstall feature of the program doesn't work properly. In any event, the "Clean Tool" program doesn't work either. It leaves numerous references to Nero9, Ahead or "Autoplay9" in the registry. And, the aforementioned "Unknown Resource ID" error remained. I used Registry Mechanic and CCleaner, but, in the end, I had to restore the registry from a backup.

It is possible that you won't have the same experience, but the odds are against you. Please read the Nero user forum for all the complaints about the install and performance. Please do a search on "Nero 9 installation troubleshooting" or "Nero 9 error resource id."

I did a complete uninstall of Nero 9 and reinstalled Nero 6. Even then, I had to manually edit the registry in order to eliminate the remaining vestiges of Nero.
